Feast of Sant Agustí Overview |
|
|
| The islands of the Balearic Archipelago
constantly host a wide variety of fabulous, celebrations that usually
mark important religious occasions, or pay homage to the patron saint
of the local vicinity. The largest of the islands, Mallorca boasts
a large array of festivals that continue to benefit from the full
and positive participation of both the local communities, and the
millions of visitors to the island from across the world each year.
|
|
| The annual feast of Sant Agustí on
August 28th, is one of the larger summer festivals held in the south
east region of this beautiful Balearic Island. Sant Agustí, or St Augustine
as he is more commonly known, is the revered patron saint of the
region's inland town, Felanitx, which is located 50 km east of the island's
capital city, Palma de Mallorca. The Sant Agustí fiestas consist of a week
of well established celebrations leading up to the feast day on the 28th,
which is the anniversary of this significant 5th Century Catholic saint's
death. |
|
The main activities of the feast's preceding week
are organized and funded, in part, by Felanitx Town Hall, and
also by the merchants, tradespeople and individuals of the stunning
municipality. The popular customary events during the seven days
of fiestas take place at locations throughout Felanitx and include
daily sporting activities, theatre productions and a fantastic
children's festival. Throughout the Iberian Peninsula it is usual
to follow the fun daytime events during fiesta with evenings filled
with the enjoyment of fine local wines, music and dancing until
the early hours of the next day. Felanitx is no exception, the
town proudly boasts a number of "verbenas," which are stunning,
traditional outdoor music and dance night festivals.
|
|
On August 28th the entire population, along with
a number of enthusiastically welcomed visitors, gather in the colourfully
decorated town centre to honour their popular patron saint with
a huge feast consisting of delicious local delicacies and fine wines.
During the feast of San Agustí there are dances to traditional Balearic
music and a highly regarded performance of the medieval dance of
the enormous devil headed 'els cavallets.' Traditionally, the children
of the town dress as horses in homemade cardboard costumes to be
chased by the giant figures in a symbolic re-enactment of local
legend, all to the constant accompaniment of various time honoured
instruments, such as bagpipes, flutes and drums. |
