National Day in Spain Overview |
|
|
| Spain celebrates an astonishing array
of festivals that are held on a fixed date each year marking
various occasions, usually connected to either an important
religious date, or the local area's patron saint. However, October
12th each year is a major national holiday recognised throughout
Spain known as Día de la Hispanidad, or Spanish National
Day.
This important national public holiday commemorates the historic
re-unification of Spain, and also Christopher Columbus's first
successful voyage from Spain to the Americas in 1492. A huge
range of popular festivities take place throughout the day across
the Iberian Peninsula and visitors should be aware that all public
utilities, shops and other businesses remain closed for the day
allowing everyone to participate in this patriotic fiesta in true
Spanish style. |
|
The main event of the day is a massive and
vibrant procession through the centre of the capital city,
which is attended by members of the Spanish royal family
and prominent government officials. Every year the streets
of Madrid are abundantly decorated with national flags
and lined with thousands people eagerly anticipating the
fantastic annual spectacle. The parade consists of
representatives from Spain's military institutions, public
services and prominent businesses accompanied by
bands and dancers representing every region of
Spain.
|
|
Colourful parades are also held in a
number of towns and cities across the country with all
the customary practices usually associated with fiesta
in Spain, including masses of obligatory fireworks, the
enjoyment of the delicious range of local foods and
wines, alongside traditional music and dancing well
into the early hours of the next day.
The regional celebrations vary slightly from town to
town, for example in Zaragoza the main festivities on
October 12th are a dual celebration of the Hispanidad
and also Día del Pilar, or the Day of the Pilar.
The traditions surrounding this local Spanish festival
held in honour of the Virgin of the Pilar, the city's
patroness have been incorporated into the formal
celebrations of the National Day. |
