At nightfall on the 5th of January, thousands of people, native to Alcoy and visitors, enjoy one of the most wonderful Christmas shows, especially the children.
This celebration has been held since 1885, there are even documents that go back to 1866. It is, without a doubt, one of the oldest parades of The Three Kings of the many that are held in Spain, and possibly , in the world. In November 2001, the Alcoy Three Kings Parade was awarded The declaration of Fiestas of International Tourist Interest.
In this parade over one thousand people from Alcoy participate: Page boys and people to carry the torches, servants and escorts; dressed up carts and carriages; the local bands. They all know the part they have got to play and they gather their strengths together to give colour and shine to the visit of Melchior, Caspar and Balthasar, that come with all their magnificence on gracious camels. They have the attention of thousands of people all gazing at them and the children go up to them to receive a caress or a kiss. As a curiosity, in this city the black king is in the middle and his name is Caspar. An army of pages are in charge of giving the children their presents. And for this they have long wooden ladders with which they climb to the balconies of the houses. Can you imagine the faces of the children, with their eyes full of excitement? It´s for this reason that in Alcoy it is tradition to open your presents on the night of the parade and not on the day of The Three Kings like in a lot of cities in Spain.
The entourage of The Three Kings arrives to the square and their Majesties get off the camels and they walk towards the Manger. The moment of worshipping Baby Jesus is accompanied with the effect of sparklers that are destributed throughout the crowd, and the act is celebrated with fireworks and over the megaphone you can hear “Messiah” composed by Haendel.
It starts at 6:00pm and it goes through the streets El Camí, Sant Nicolau and the Plaça d´Espanya where the “Worshipping” takes place. Once this has finished, gone 8:00pm, and after the fireworks, they continue their journey through Sant Llorenç, País Valencià, the bridge of María Cristina, el paseo de Cervantes, Alçamora and the bridge of Sant Roc where it finishes around 10:00pm.
If you are in the province of Alicante this Christmas, we recommend you rent a car cheaply from Alicante´s airport and you drive down to this town and enjoy this show.
I wish you all the very best for that night and that their Majesties bring you lots of presents.
