Easter in Bilbao
The Brotherhood members of Bilbao will exhibit, yet another year, one of the most important cultural-artistic and religious treasures of the Peninsula and, undoubtedly, the most oustanding in the Bay of Biscay. Is worthwhile hiring a car at Bilbao airport or Bilbao city to discover the region also. In the province of Biscay, the Holy Week celebrations held in Bilbao compete with Bermeo´s celebrations as regards the dating of the same because both cities battled in the year 1500 for the control of the land of Biscay.
The most important pieces that can be seen on the streets of Bilbao are the carvings and sculptures that date back to 1500 and 1600, such as “ Nuestra Señora de la Soledad” ( Our Lady of Solitude) and the “Santo Cristo de la Villa” ( Sacred Christ of the Town). There are other pieces of high value, such as the “Coronación de Espinas” (Crowing of the Storms) or the “Cruz a Cuestas” ( The Cross on one´s back), wich are not as ancient, but nevertheless are extremely beautiful and are rated as one of the most important pieces in the State.
The celebrations starts 15th of April till 24th of April.
Rowing Sunday
One of the events that generates more expentacy at this time of the year, is the celebration of the Ingenieros-Deusto Rowing Race, wich takes place on the 17th of April. This competition coincides, on purpose, with the procession of Palm Sunday. Its logo is as follows: “Domingo de Ramos, Domingo de Remos” ( Palm Sunday, Rowing Sunday). This indirect message drags both the people from Bilbao and foreigners to a competition that commenced in 1981, as a resulto the sporting Challenger that the Escuela Superior de Ingenieros ( School of Engineering of Bilbao) presented to the University of Deusto, both being the most ancient university centres of the city, with a back ground of over one Century each.
This competition is a completely amateur university rowing event, developed within an ambience of healty competitiveness, whose sole objective is that of registering the name of the winner in the history of the competition. The modality chosen is the professional rowing bech, and specically, the Olympic outriggers, consisting of eight rowers and a helmsman.
The regatta is held in the estuary along a four nautical mile route, 7.408 metres, wich is 628 metres longer than the Oxford-Cambridge regatta. It commences at 1.00 pm from Portu dock in Erandio, and ends approximately 25 minutes later opposite the Town Hall of Bilbao.
